Jackie Mason and Hal Holbrook
Word from: menachem
My newest column on "Jackie Mason: Freshly Squeezed" and "Mark Twain Tonight!" is online at the Jewish Press.
I encourage comments, though I seem to interest only David with my posts. So David, I hope you like it:)
Here is a selection:
Holbrook`s and Mason`s shows are not just Playbill gimmicks, though. Both distinguish themselves from the stand-up comics that you could see for a whole lot cheaper, a few dozen blocks downtown in the village, through their self-meditation and postmodern approach to storytelling and witticism. (Mason correctly observes that the Jews that were laughing did not pay for their tickets — to which this reviewer pleads guilty.) But more important, Mason and Holbrook are important because they turn the dated into the timeless. Holbrook`s depiction of Twain attempts to resurrect one of the greatest American literary geniuses, and Twain is a particularly good choice for the monologue, since he was one of the first writers to revolutionize the book tour, with countless speeches, lectures and readings in a variety of venues. And, dear me, I have violated the one post a week! Mwahahaha...

Menachem you know I'm your biggest fan. I'd love to see elaboration on how Jackie Mason is "post-modern". Are you sure he is not a post-structural feminist? Hmmm. Anyway, I'm seriously interested in what the qualifications of the pomo storyteller are. Like the Storahtelling group? Or like certain sci-fi writers? Hey - how about Joseph Conrad? Let's talk this over absinthe some time.

See, I knew if I waited, someone else would comment...
Twain and Mason..hmm, I've been to Twain's hometown in Hannibal, Missouri. But not Sheboygan, Mason's home!? Both of their names pop in right wing columns on Israel, Mason with a few quips to bring more attention Raoul Fedler, Twain's philosophe comments mocking the Holy Land become proofs for Zionism. Still, not many would draw them together, so nicely done, maybe it will inspire a Jewish Press reader to pick up the works of some goy named Samuel Clemens...and move beyond provinicialism, as Twain did...

Mason is post-modern because he meditates upon his own act. I think absinthe will inspire me to elaborate :)
Dave, Clemens has a yidishe neshama, and you know it! I hope to see you soon in Boston, previous home of a different Clemens...

One review I saw noted that Holbrook has been doing Twain longer than Twain did (as Twain was a created persona).
