Jewish Events
Word from: Mordy
While I was unable to attend myself, I got a blow-by-blow account of Yidstock, Sunday night. Apparently, instead of the thousands hoped to arrive, about 1,500 people actually came. And while I'm not privy to the exact numbers, an involved member told me that the show is 20 grand in the whole. Plus, between the marijuana, the grinding, and the hardcore act that played the show (really!) it looks like we skipped over the original Woodstock and skipped straight to Woodstock '96. Ouch. Though I've been told the performances were generally good, except for a mishap with Blue Fringe and faulty circuits. Can anyone who was there add to this?
Tonight I attended the The Great Big Jewish Quiz Thing, which was surprisingly entertaining. Steven I. Weiss from Canonist was there, as was David Kelsey from HEEB. The Fleishik team took the lead early on and dominated for much of the game, but Milchek came from behind to take the surprising win. Look for my play-by-play details in New Voices for the specifics of the game.
One last thing: I saw the Sufjan Stevens show on Pep Rally Night. It was awesome. I can't wait for him to do New York.

I led YU to it's only national appearance in the NAQT (College Bowl Championships) in 2001 but no one thought of inviting me. I guess being part of a clique matters more than actual talent.

Those Yidstock numbers must be an exaggeration - I was there and saw 500 people at most (and that's being generous). The marijuana I didn't smell, the grinding I saw (and wondered about), and the hardcore band had their mics cut after two songs - they were awful. The whole thing seemed entirely unprofessional - more like a get-together for a few friends than a legitamate concert festival. If there is a Yidstock '66 (which I strongly doubt), I won't be in attendance. On the whole, the music was pretty mediocre, although I will say that Yossi Piamenta and Soulfarm were amazing (I left before Blue Fringe).

I saw Sufjan Stevens at the Bowery Ballroom during Pep Week at the Fake Tattoos and Facial Hair night.. it was amazing. While Sufjan is far from jewish (well, as far as from jewish as christians, which isnt always so far), I'm glad you mentioned him cause he is amazing.
Will you be attending much of the NY Jewish Music & Heritage Festival?

There were more then 500 People, Contrary to populer belief.
I Personaly sold 430 Tickets, Mostly at the door. I was involved in more ways then one. The bands were OK Compared to the current "Mainstream".
Yerachmiel [ www.yerachmiel.com ] Deffinatly takes the lead as far as talent is concerned, At least thats my opinion
