in brief
Word from: David

Ever wondered if there was an Israeli publication similar to Mima'amakim? There are several and one journal of poetry Mashiv Haruach is profiled in a recent Ha'aretz article.

Mashiv HaRuach isn't quite Mima'amakim. I got excited when I first heard about it, and went to check out some event. It was very proper and establishment-like, both in content and form. The poetry is formal. Israelis don't yet know from wild rant and slam work. The audience was older. The work expressed traditional religious perspectives, rather then our work which has a tendency to be a bit edgy. In short, I found them boring.

Despite that, over chol hamoed they have their annual festival at the Khan Theater (right by the Jerusalem train station) and I plan on going to check out the amateur night there.

    Details on the poetry festival.
I have a proper e-mail from them with graphics, if anyone wants that e-mail me The theme of the festival is Shabbat.

    Meanwhile, here's a quick summary.

20:30 Tribute to Chaim Guri. 8 Poets will be reading, including Chaim Guri (I have no idea who that is) and two bands will be playing. Khan, 40 Shekel.

    Thursday, 10/20

One from Ma'aleh, and two from Sam Shpiegel. Cinemateque, 34/24 Shekel, and free for cool people with cinemateque membership
18:45 Lecha Dodi. A poetry reading in the footsteps of R' Shlomo HaLevi Alkabetz. Five poets I don't know, some musical acts. Khan, 25 Shekel.
20:15 Tribute to Yosef Tzvi Rimon. Four poets, including Rav Yosef Tzvi Rimon, Ram in Yeshivat Har Etzion, Rav of Alon Shvut B, and the poet's grandson. Also a band will be playing here. Khan, 30 shekl.
21:45 Midrashir. Learning one of Rimon's poems accompanied by traditional Jewish texts. Khan, free.

Like I told you all, I'm going to the amateur thing on Tuesday night. I look forward to seeing anyone there. Please, if anybody has a good experience at any of these events, send me an e-mail, or post here so that I know. Maybe we can inject a little mima'amakim into these windy folk.

Judging from the event list, maybe Mima'amakim could use some Mashiv HaRuach. I personally we have too many rants that overpower intellectual content (whatever that may be.)
